Temporally Distinct 3D Multi-Omic Dynamics in the Developing Human Brain
Prof. Dong-Sung Lee
Professor Dongsung Lee from the College of Medicine at SNU, in collaboration with researchers at UCLA and UCSF, has published a paper in Nature, being the first in the world to study epigenomic changes, including the three-dimensional genome structure and DNA methylation, during human brain development from the fetal stage to adulthood at the single-cell level, using the single-nucleus methyl-3C technology they developed.

New Development in Color Priniting
Professor KWON Sung-hoon's research team developed a high-resolution patterning technique that produces multiple sturctural colors within seconds by mimicking the structural colors found in butterfly wings and peacock feathers. Kwon said that he has overcome limitations in previous approaches to demonstrate rapid produ...

Applying Nano Technology to Interpret DNA Sequencing
Professor KIM Ki-bum has developed a"nanopore ion transistor" which can be used for interpreting DNA sequencing results and controling biomolecules. He succeeded to create a new ion transistor with 1~2 nanometer of nanopores. He used electron beam lithograhpy and atomic layer deposition for a sturcture of 100 nm membran...

Indonesian Tribe Adopts Korean Alphabet as Writing System
A minority tribe in the city of 'Bauer-Bauer', located in Buton, Southeast Sulawesi, has chosen Korean alphabet Hangeul as the official alphabet to transcribe its aboriginal language. With a population of around 60,000, the tribe stood to lose its language because it had no alphabet to transcribe it. SNU professors of l...

Why Diabetics Get Depressed and Forgetful?
It is easily noticed that diabetes patients get easily depressed and forgetful, which has been attributed to psychological causes. A research team at SNU College of Medicine has found the scientific causes for the first time.Professor LYOO In-kyoon has found a link between levels of 'glutamate' and symptoms of depressi...

5 Additional Centimeters in Height Links to 5% Greater Cancer Risk
Professor SUNG Joohon found a new link between height and cancer risk. Sung's research team investigated 788,789 Korean men and women aged 40 to 65 from 1994 to 2003 to find an evidence links height and cancer risk. The result said, for men, every additional five centimeters in height was associated with a 5% greater r...

Sequencing the Entire Gene Map of Korean Male
SNU has succeeded sequencing the entire gene map of a Korean male. Professor SEO Jeong-Sun, Head of the Genomic Medicine Institute at SNU College of Medicine, has led the research and published the result on Nature. The title of the paper was 'A highly annotated whole-genome sequence of a Korean individual.'To date, hu...

Females Can Decide For Themselves
Females of an Asian species of water strider keep their genitalia hidden to avoid any forceful copulation attempts, and expose them only after males produce a courtship “song” by tapping the water surface, according to a new study of Professor Piotr Jablonski and his graduate students CHANG Seok Han.CHANG and Jablonski...

Hydrophobic Lithography
The successful use of any new material in electronic applications depends not only on its electrical characteristics but on how easily it can be formed into the patterns needed for building complex device structures. For organic materials - which hold great promise for making low cost and large area electronics - conve...

Insulator-metal Transitions
The study of insulator-metal transitions (IMT) in transition metal oxides, where conductivity changes from an insulator to a metal, is important for understanding phenomena such as superconductivity. For the first time, Professor NOH Tae Won at Dept. of Physics has controlled IMT in a series of 5d transition metals com...

Dimensional Crossover in Nano-size Particles
Professor CHOE Sug-bong found that nano-size particles could be reduced to the point where they exist in a blurred boundary between a two-dimensional and one-dimensional phase. CHOE's research marks the first time that the dimensional crossover from a two-dimensional planar object and a one-dimensional line has been ob...
