Design Exploration Framework for Real-World Engineering Problem

Dec 26, 2011

Subject: Design Exploration Framework for Real-World Engineering Problem

Speaker: JEONG Shinkyu (Professor, Institute of Fluid Science, Tohoku University)

Summary
Real-world engineering problems require the simultaneous consideration of many disciplines. Furthermore, there is a tremendous number of design variable accumulated from all disciplines. Thus, the design space of engineering problems is very high-dimensional and complicated. For the successful real world engineering design, the designer must understand the structure of design problem to be solved. Thus, design exploration for engineering problems should be able to supply not only potential optimum solutions but also information (design knowledge) showing the structure of the design space. In this seminar, a design exploration framework called “ MODE (Multi-Objective Design Exploration)” will be introduced.
This framework consists of multi-objective shape optimization, which suggests the multiple optimum solutions, and data mining that supplies useful information about the design space. As a multi-objective shape optimization tool, MOGA (multi-objective genetic algorithm) coupled with high accuracy Kriging model is adopted. For the data mining, ANOVA (Analysis of Variance), SOM (Self-Organizing Map), Association Rule, etc. are used in the Framework. The information obtained from data mining will be also helpful for the decision maker’s design making.
Applications to aerospace and naval engineering design problem will be introduced in this seminar.
