KNIUT 2007,"Knowledge, Interaction and Understanding Transboundary!"
KNIUT-HPAIR SNU (Harvard Project for Asian and International Relations at Seoul National University) has annually hosted its forum KNIUT to open discourse and exchange thoughts on issues confronting Korea, Asia and the World. KNIUT is an acronym of"Knowledge, Interaction and Understanding Transboundary" while being an archaic Korean word meaning 'neighbors'. Our ancestors are known to have maintained close and sincere relations with their neighbors, the fact which no doubt gave birth to the saying, close neighbors are better than distant relatives. In the summer of 2007, through its annual forum of the year, KNIUT-HPAIR SNU hopes to share in-depth discussions and valuable experiences on seeking peace in the Korean Peninsula and Eastern Asia with all participating delegates.

KNIUT 2007 seeks to find changes in the 21st century security environment and how Korean foreign policies should be shaped as a result. In the Peninsula where the two Koreas have been divided for more than fifty years, the theme of 'National Security' may have become overly familiar. In reality though, the North Korean nuclear issue is regarded as a major threat to the Peninsula and Eastern Asia alike and even at this moment six-party talks are in progress to reach a feasible solution. Peace and security is an issue where past, present and future coexist and there are many more problems to solve for a peaceful and prosperous Northeast Asia. KNIUT 2007 aims create an arena of discussion which will facilitate debate and ongoing interest on the construction of a peace system in the Korean Peninsula and Eastern Asia.
Discussion will begin in current changes in diplomacy and security environment. The national security and foreign policies of the United States, which assumes itself as the hegemony, is playing a decisive role in forming and changing the security environment of Eastern Asia. Unfurling a positive engagement strategy in Eastern Asia with the end of the cold war, the United State's military policy has swerved considerably since the 9.11 attacks. In Session One, we discuss the 21st century defense transformation and transformation diplomacy of the United States, and in Session Two, we discuss the regional meaning of such transformations in Eastern Asia and how relationships between countries in the region change due to the transformations. In Session Three, considering the specialty of security in Eastern Asia and the relationship between its countries, we look to the possibility of constructing a multilateral security community to foster peace in the region and in the Korean Peninsula, and by analyzing and following current six-party talks, we aim to concretely visualize a model security community. In the concluding session, Session Four, we seek to understand Korea?s role in creating a peace system for Eastern Asia and the Korean Peninsula and critically go over preexisting plans.
