The 13th Student Human Rights Research Project Contest

Seoul National University's Human Rights Center is hosting the Student Human Rights Research Project Contest, a program that allows undergraduate students to think about social phenomena, legal systems, and culture from a human rights perspective and explore directions for improving human rights. We encourage interested students to apply.

 

1. Application for Research Project Contest Participation

- Research Topic: You can freely select from various topics related to human rights.

-Research Period: May 2025 ~ September 2025 (5 months).

-Eligibility: Seoul National University undergraduate students (including students on leave of absence, but students graduating in August 2025 are not eligible as they must be registered until the 2nd semester of 2025).

-Application Method: Apply through the extracurricular management system portal:

-Application Deadline: March 31, 2025 (Monday), midnight.

-Required Documents: Application Form Format.

(1) Application Form [Form 1].

(2) Research Proposal [Form 2].

(3) Researcher Pledge [Form 3].

(4) Certificate of Enrollment. Restrictions: Students who have received support from other undergraduate research support programs with the same research topic cannot apply.

 

2. Support Details Research expenses will be provided upon project selection.

Individual Research - Maximum KRW 600,000 per person.

Group Research - Maximum KRW 600,000 per person, total research expenses for the team not exceeding KRW 2,000,000.

*The support amount will vary depending on the number of participants per project.

*Research expenses may vary depending on the project's scale and nature, as well as the total number of contest participants.

*Research expenses will be paid into individual researchers' accounts.

Awards for Outstanding Research Papers:

Research results will be reviewed, and awards will be given for outstanding papers, including Grand Prize, Excellence Award, Merit Award, and Encouragement Award, along with corresponding cash prizes.

* If no paper qualifies for an award based on the review, no award may be given.

**The number and combination of awards may vary depending on research results.

 

3. Management of Research Projects

-Research Period: May 2025 ~ September 2025 (5 months).

-Timeline: Application Deadline ~ March 31, 2025 (Monday).

-Document Review (results individually notified) - April 1, 2025 (Tuesday) to April 7, 2025 (Monday).

-Presentation Review - One session between April 8, 2025 (Tuesday) and April 11, 2025 (Friday).

-Announcement of Selection Results - April 16, 2025 (Wednesday).

-Orientation (Research Ethics and others) - One session between mid to late April.

-Midterm Presentation - Last week of August (schedule subject to change).

-Submission of Final Report - September 26, 2025 (Friday).

-Presentation of Final Report and Awards Ceremony - Third week of October (tentative).

 

Orientation (including guidelines on research ethics)

-Date: One session between mid to late April (exact time to be announced later).

-All team members must participate in the orientation. Failure to attend may lead to cancellation of project selection.

 

Midterm Presentation

-Date: Last week of August (exact date subject to change; specific date and time to be announced later).

-Content: Presentation on the progress of the research project. Format: Specific format to be announced later.

 

Final Report Submission Submission

-Deadline: September 26, 2025 (Friday).

-Final Report: Research results in the form of a paper, up to 20 pages of A4 size.

 

4. Others

Suspension and Recovery of Research Expenses:

-Research expenses may be suspended or recovered if used in violation of the purpose for which they were provided, if it is discovered that the same research topic received support from other undergraduate research support programs, if midterm presentations or final reports are not submitted within the deadlines, or if other clear reasons for project termination arise.

 

If your research methodology includes human subjects such as interviews:

If your research method involves "human subjects," completing education on research ethics is mandatory.

"Human subjects" refer to research involving physical interventions or interactions such as communication or interpersonal contact with individuals, or research using information that can identify individuals. (Article 2, Paragraph 1 of the Bioethics and Safety Act).

Human Subjects Research Ethics Education: Access http://edu.irb.or.kr, register as a member, and complete education on human subjects research.

 

Seoul National University's Research Ethics Guidelines

Article 20 (Principles):

① Researchers conducting studies involving humans (including clinical trials, biomedical sciences, and behavioral sciences) must respect the rights, health, and welfare of research participants to the fullest extent.

② Researchers must fully explain the purpose and procedures of the study, as well as anticipated risks, and obtain voluntary consent from research participants. Exceptions may apply if pre-approved by accredited organizations such as Seoul National University’s Institutional Review Board.

③ Researchers must minimize risks to participants and avoid conducting studies that severely compromise participants' health and welfare.

④ Vulnerable groups among research participants must be specially considered regarding the consent process and risks.

⑤ Researchers must ensure the confidentiality of participants' privacy and protect personal information.

 

Acknowledgment in Research Results: If the final research results are published in journals or books, include the following acknowledgment:
