[About the Lecture]
In this lecture, I will examine the key characteristics that define GenAI imagery as a distinct visual medium, comparing this new form with older representational media such as photography, painting, cinema and computer graphics. I will also situate GenAI media within the development and growth of web and data cultures of the last few decades. The presentation will draw on some of the ideas from my latest book “Artificial Aesthetics: Generative AI, Art and Visual Media,” while also proposing new directions. Finally, I will also discuss possible uses of GenAI technologies for visual anthropology research, including new ways of using and analyzing visual data.
