Greetings from the Department of Sociology, Seoul National University.
We are pleased to announce the upcoming International Symposium Bodily Sociology: Trans-Corporeality in the Anthropocene, organized by Jonghun Kim (PhD Student) and Naeun Lee (PhD Candidate), as part of SNU’s Graduate Student-led Global Symposium Initiative.
This event will take place on January 10, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM (KST), at Room 107, Building 223 (Wooseok Economics Hall).
The symposium gathers sociologists and anthropologists actively engaging their own bodies in field research to explore themes of care, migration, climate crisis, and pharmaceuticals. Participants will discuss the body as a dynamic and interconnected entity, constantly reshaping itself in relation to the world and others, challenging the notion of the body as a fixed object.
The event features presentations by emerging scholars—doctoral candidates, recent graduates, and early career researchers—from the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Korea. Distinguished faculty members specializing in sociology, anthropology, and medical humanities will serve as discussants.
The symposium will conclude with a special lecture by Professor Tim Ingold, renowned anthropologist from the UK. Known for his seminal works such as The Perception of the Environment, Lines: A Brief History, and Correspondences, Professor Ingold critiques modern dualisms between body and mind, matter and reason. His lecture, For a New Humanism, will reflect on modern humanism and propose new directions for its reimagining.
We warmly invite researchers and students interested in the body, posthumanism, qualitative methodologies, and interdisciplinary approaches to join us. Onsite participants will be provided with lunch, dinner and refreshments.
We look forward to your participation!
Dept. of Sociology.
