Double Majors

Students enrolled in double majors must complete two or more major programs, including their core major curriculum.

Applicant Qualifications: Students can apply for a double major after registering for more than two regular semesters and obtaining 33 credits or more.

Application Procedure & Cancellation: A student wishing to double major within the same college must obtain approval from their department head and submit their application to the dean of the college.; If a student wishes to double major in a different college, they must obtain approval from their department head and submit their application to the college of the double major.; Deans must notify the SNU president of students accepted into double majors in their colleges.; The same applies to cancellation.

Credit Requirements: Students must complete 39 credits of major courses specified by each of the relevant departments for the completion of double major studies, and obtain a GPA of 2.0 or above.; Relevant major courses taken prior to being accepted into a double major will be recognized as credits towards that major.

Course Recognition: If courses that are in the curriculums of both majors are considered to overlap, they will be counted as major credits in both majors. Up to nine overlapping credits are permitted. Courses in other departments that are acknowledged by both majors can also overlap, with a maximum of three such credits permitted.

Diploma requirements: If you have completed a double major, you must notify your academic department. You will not be awarded a separate diploma for each major you have completed, and all of your majors will be listed on one diploma.
Ex) This student has graduated from the Department of Chinese Literature and has also completed a major in the Department of Political Science and International Relations.

Notice: Students with multiple majors may enroll for two more academic semesters.

Interdisciplinary Major

A combined major is a curriculum program that combines at least two major programs offered by two or more departments, or a curriculum proposed by a student which is approved by the University. The combined major is considered to be one independent major. You cannot complete a combined major without completing all majors involved.

Applicant Qualifications: Students can apply for a combined major after registering for more than two regular semesters and obtaining 33 credits or more.

Application and Cancellation Procedure: Students should obtain approval from the department head and submit the application or cancellation form to the dean of the college of their combined major. The dean should report the acceptance or cancellation results to the president.

Credit Requirements: Students must complete a minimum of 39 credits of major courses as specified by the relevant departments of the combined major program, and obtain a GPA of 2.0 or above.; Relevant major courses taken prior to being accepted into a double major will be recognized as credits towards that major.

Course Recognition: Courses that are in the curriculums of both majors are considered to overlap, and will be counted towards both majors. However, students may not overlap more than nine credits. Courses that are accepted by both majors can also overlap, and overlapping will be permitted up to three credits.

Combined Minor

Combined minor is an interdisciplinary minor program offered by certain departments.

Applicant Qualifications: Students can apply for a combined minor after registering for more than two regular semesters and obtaining 33 credits or more.

Application and Cancellation Procedure: Students should obtain approval from the department head and submit the application or cancellation form to the dean of the college of their combined minor. The dean should report the acceptance or cancellation results to the president.

Credit Requirements: Students should earn more than 39 credits from the major courses offered by the department and more than 21 credits from the courses offered by the combined minor of their choice.; Students may get credit for relevant major courses taken before their acceptance to the combined minor program.; Students should obtain a GPA of 2.0 or above.

Graduation Certificate: Completion of a minor is stated on the graduation certificate as well as the scholastic record, and no separate certificates are conferred upon completion of each program.
Ex) Be it known that on the recommendation of the faculty the degree of Bachelor of Science in Mathematics (combined minor in Financial Mathematics) is hereby conferred upon 000 with all the rights and privileges thereto pertaining given at Seoul National University, Republic of Korea.

Student Designed Major

Student designed major is an official curriculum program organized by a student. To be included in the official school curriculum, the program needs to get approval from the student designed major evaluation committee consisting of professors in relevant fields.

Applicant Qualifications: Students can apply for a student designed major after registering for more than two regular semesters and obtaining 33 credits or more.; Students with a GPA of over 3.3 (B+) are eligible to apply.; Students must complete 〈Individual Course Design 2〉 by the College of Liberal Studies

Application Procedure: Studendt must access “snugenie.snu.ac.kr” before the application period, fill out the composition and completion plan of the student design major in advance, and apply by linking the information at mySNU during the application period.; The head of the operating institution of the student design major must hold a student design major committee within the fixed date and obtain approval from the president.

Credit Requirements: General education courses do not count toward the required major credit for the completion of the student designed major.; Students should earn more than 39 credits from the major courses offered by the department and more than 39 credits from the courses offered by the student designed major.; Students enrolled in student designed majors are required to take 〈Undergraduate Independent Study 1〉, 〈Capstone Design〉 and submit a thesis. However, as 〈Undergraduate Independent Study 1〉 is a general education course, it does not count toward the required major credit for completion of the student designed major.

Student Directed Education Program

Graduation Certificate: Completion of a student designed major is stated on the graduation certificate as well as the scholastic record.
Ex) Be it known that on the recommendation of the faculty the degree of Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences (000 student designed major) is hereby conferred upon 000 with all the rights and privileges thereto pertaining given at Seoul National University, Republic of Korea.

Combined Major in Education

Upon successful completion of a combined major in education, students obtain a teaching license certified by the Ministry of Education and Science Technology.

Relevant Departments: The College of Education offers combined major in education curriculum programs so that students can obtain teaching licenses in social studies or science upon successful completion.

Selection Criteria and Limit: Selection criteria for the combined major in education is GPA, and the number of students selected may not exceed that of juniors already in the department.

Applicant Qualifications and Procedures: Among students who are majoring in relevant departments, those who have registered for four or more semesters, completed more than half of the credits required for graduation and earned a GPA of 2.7 or above are eligible to apply.; Students should get approval from the department head and submit the application form within the first quarter of the semester to the dean of their college.

Credit Requirements: For successful completion of a combined major in education, students should take 42 or more credits (50 or more for incoming class of 2009 and on)of the major courses and earn a GPA of 2.4 or above for both major courses and combined major in education courses.; Students should take more than 2 subjects (4 credits) of teaching (8 credits or more for incoming class of 2009 and on).; Credits received from the major courses in the students’ respective departments (up to 12 for general science and 14 for general social studies) are counted toward required credits for completion of the combined major in education.

Cancellation: Students should get approval from the department dean and submit the cancellation form to the dean two weeks before the beginning of the semester.
