Distinguished SNU Members

Seoul National University honors the people who made distinguished achievements in their lives with the Distinguished SNU Members Award. It has been the highest honor bestowed upon SNU alumni or faculty since 1991. The award is granted annually on the founding anniversary of the university during the official anniversary ceremony.

Jo Wan-kyu/former President of Seoul National University

He dedicated himself to academic research and nurturing future generations in the field of biology. As the inaugural dean of the College of Natural Sciences and later the 18th president of the university, he significantly contributed to the stability and growth of the institution during challenging times. Additionally, as the 32nd Minister of Education, he made significant contributions to advancing education, science, and technology in South Korea.

Lee Hae-jin/founder of NAVER Corporation and Chairman of LINE

As the founder of NAVER Group, he currently serves as the Global Investment Officer of NAVER and the Chairman of LINE, the global messenger service. He's renowned for leading NAVER to the forefront of the internet platform scene in South Korea and is hailed as a pioneer in the IT industry. With an unwavering entrepreneurial drive, he's expanded LINE into international markets and is focused on building a strong portfolio in North America, Europe, and beyond. His ultimate aim is to create a robust global business ecosystem, transcending borders and fostering innovation.

Lee Hong-koo/former Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea.

Having spent around two decades as a professor at Seoul National University, he not only mentored many individuals but also showcased his academic prowess and commitment to public service. As Minister of Unification, he crafted the enduring "Unified Plan for the Korean Ethnic Community." His diplomatic roles as Ambassador to the United Kingdom and the United States saw him tirelessly championing national interests. Overseeing three administrations from Roh Tae-woo to Kim Dae-jung, his leadership, transcending political divides, has cemented his status as a respected elder statesman, inspiring generations to come.
