Hunmin jeongeum Society's Scripta 2012
HIT: 8830
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.
Two years ago, I gave a congratulatory address for the Hunmin jeongeum Society's Scripta 2010 conference. I am honored to stand here again to speak for Scripta 2012.
For the 566th birthday of Hangeul, many world-class academics have honored Scripta 2012 with their presence. Professor Richard Salomon (University of Washington), deciphering the Kharoṣṭhī documents from Afghanistan; Professor Frank Salomon (University of Wisconsin-Madison), delving into the society and culture of Andean Indians; Professor Reinhart G. Lehmann (Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz), an expert on Mesopotamian civilization and the Semitic alphabet; Professor Zev Handel (University of Washington), inquiring into the pronunciation of ancient Chinese and the writing systems of surrounding countries; Professor Alex de Voogt (American Museum of Natural History), following the establishment and use of writing systems in Africa: Welcome to Korea. Our own participants from the College of Humanities, Professors Lee Hyeon-hie (이현희), Bae Chulhyun (배철현), and Jung Hakyung (정하경), warm thanks to you as well.
In recent years, SNU has made a great leap forward to join the ranks of world-class universities. SNU's success is partly due to the its efforts at opening the doors, inviting many foreign students and faculty, including our professor of Sanskrit. However, international academic exchanges such as today's conference organized by the Hunmin jeongeum Society, has greatly empowered the university as well. And I would like to thank all of the participants for bringing such academic rigor to our campus.
I would like especially extend my deep gratitude to Professor Lee SeungJae, president of the Society, and to all others whose commitment has made this conference possible. I hope all of you enjoy the conference on this meaningful day in the history of writing systems.
Thank you.
