Distinguished Scholars, Ladies and Gentlemen!
It is a great pleasure to welcome all of you who have joined us here today to share some thoughts on Liberal Studies in Asia. This is the Second International Symposium organized by the College of Liberal Studies, Seoul National University — and I am proud to say that a lot has been achieved since its inauguration in 2009. College of Liberal Studies started out with the vision of creating an educational program that would furnish students with a bigger, broader, and more expansive outlook in our contemporary world.
Today, three years after its establishment, College of Liberal Studies embodies some of the finest educational principles and values that Seoul National University has nurtured throughout its history.
Here at Seoul National University, the College of Liberal Studies aims to provide students with a broad range of innovative educational practices that have been carefully selected and developed to create the best possible learning environment. In particular, we focus on active learning, inter-disciplinary course designs, extra-curricular – and volunteer work, creative and independent learning, and student-designed majors. Above all, the College of Liberal Studies strives to give students a more complete and well-rounded experience of what the university may offer young, bright and talented people in today’s world.
It is my sincere conviction that Liberal Studies truly contributes to the cultivation of our future leaders. We are facing an immensely important task that we can solve only by joining our efforts. As the President of Seoul National University, I believe that it is crucial to give all my support to collaborative academic efforts in the Asian region. Once again, I would like to express my profound gratitude to all the participants in today’s international seminar, especially to the Dean and the staff of College of Liberal Studies who have organized this important event.
Thank you.
