'Campus Asia' International Conference
HIT: 8670
Distinguished Guests, Colleagues, and Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is a great pleasure and an honor to be here with you on this special day, as we mark the beginning of the very first “CAMPUS Asia” International Conference. I would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone.
All of us here, I am sure, recognize the importance of nurturing the future leaders of East Asia. Leaders with global competence. Leaders with a thorough understanding of East Asian values. This is especially true at a time when Asia is emerging as the center of an increasingly globalized world. The goal of “CAMPUS Asia” is to contribute to a firm establishment of a closely-knit East Asian community by fostering active student exchanges and by striving towards a deeper mutual understanding among Korea, Japan and China, and eventually ASEAN countries. Our mission is simple. CAMPUS Asia will and must play a key role in this great enterprise.
As you all know, SNU already has made great progress in strengthening ties in higher education with its partnership with Peking University and University of Tokyo through the BESETO program since 1999. This program expanded into the BESETOHA program, incorporating Hanoi University. The annual forums among these universities in the past 12 years have already made a great contribution towards an active faculty and student exchange and joint research. I will continue to fully support this endeavor.
And yet, there is more to be done. We need to find real and practical ways to overcome the hurdles of academic and regulatory differences among the various East Asian universities if we are seriously committed to the creation of an East Asian academic community. I believe “CAMPUS Asia” initiative will be an important stepping stone for developing practical measures through which we can find ways for a much more active exchange and cooperation.
“CAMPUS Asia” is designed as a forum where effective cooperative measures and administrative structures among the universities in Korea, Japan and China can be discussed. Through active discussions with participating university consortia, “CAMPUS Asia” will pave a new path for the future of East Asian community.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Ju-Ho Lee, the Minister of Education, Science and Technology, and Mr. Jan Truszcynski, the Director-General of Education and Culture of the European Commission who will deliver the keynote speech.
Also, I would like to extend my gratitude to the consortia of participating universities and all of our participants from our partner universities from China and Japan; to the organizers of this conference: Korean Consortia of CAMPUS Asia and the Graduate School of International Studies of Seoul National University, for their hard work in planning and coordinating this conference.
I wish everyone an enjoyable and immensely productive conference. I have no doubt that “CAMPUS Asia” will bring us closer as a true “community.”
Thank you.
