Congratulatory Remarks
2009 International Conference
International Alliance of Leading Education Institutes
Jang-Moo Lee, Ph D
President, Seoul National University
August 19, 2009
Honorable deans and directors of leading education institutes from ten countries, distinguished researchers and guests, and ladies and gentlemen, good morning.
It is a great pleasure for me indeed to extend to all of you a cordial welcome on behalf of Seoul National University and to pay tribute to your efforts and cooperation for the 2009 International Conference of the International Alliance of Leading Education Institutes.
Founded in 1895 and reestablished as the first national university in Korea in 1946, Seoul National University is now on its way to becoming a globalized research university. Our aim is to transform the university into an internationally recognized world-class research university. We are fostering more active international academic exchange and intellectual collaboration. I strongly believe that the International Conference of the International Alliance of Leading Education Institutes will contribute to the formation of the spirit that will ultimately buttress these collaborated activities.
The author of the English novel The Time Machine, H. G. Wells once commented, “Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe.” In this epoch of changes and challenges in both natural and societal environments, responses from education undoubtedly take actions and empower us against such existing and incoming obstacles. In this respect, all of the efforts and resolutions that the Alliance has made will encourage everyone concerned to pursue the best possible solutions. In addition, the Alliance has played the critical role of a reliable think-thank, offering practical and fresh insights, serving as a collective voice on educational matters, and contributing to education on the basis of its strengths, achievements, and international recognition in teaching programs and educational research.
I also recognize that this conference will play a key role in promoting future international, intercultural, and inter-organizational cooperation and thus contribute to academic excellence in this era of knowledge-intensive collaborating society. I am confident that the conference will build on the goodwill established during the last two years and cooperate in realizing a unique vision for the establishment of common grounds to make significant contributions to education both locally and internationally.
With this in mind, I very much look forward to your discussions and exchange of views at today’s conference. Once again, I heartily welcome you all to Seoul National University. I strongly hope and know that you will find the conference extremely stimulating and enjoyable.
Thank you.
