Dr. Jang-Moo Lee
President, Seoul National University
November 17, 2008
Hoam Faculty House
Distinguished guests, respected colleagues, and ladies and gentlemen.
Once again, it is the time successfully to wrap up a year's work. Considering just how busy you all must be, thank you very much for taking your precious time to participate in the 1st International Conference for Seoul Techno Holdings, Inc.
In particular, I would like to extend my gratitude to distinguished guests from abroad. First of all, please allow me to express my sincere appreciation for:
- Mr. Song Jun (CEO, Tsinghua Holdings Co., Ltd.)
- Dr. Peter Lee (CEO, Auckland Uniservices, Ltd.)
- Mr. Swan Foo Boon (Executive Chairman, Exploit Technology Pte., Ltd.)
- Dr. Rocky Law (Associate Director, Technology Transfer Center, HKUST)
- Prof. Tetsuo Ogama (GM, Office of Intellectual Property, University of Tokyo)
- Prof. Keisuke Makino (Director, Innovation Collaboration Center, Kyoto University)
for coming to our campus. I welcome all of you and hope that today's event will serve as a catalyst for strengthening international cooperation on the transfer of innovative technology.
In addition, I am most thankful for the ceaseless efforts of staff members of Seoul Techno Holdings, Inc. including President Jeong-ik Noh.
We at Seoul National University (SNU) have continued to pursue the Three I's, which in recent years have become common concern of prestigious universities around the world: Innovation; Internationalization; and Interdisciplinary research. As has been widely publicized through press coverage, SNU has already grown into a world-class research university and now is boldly innovating its system to become a global leader of higher education and R & D.
In addition to academic research and the education of talented individuals, the two goals unique to universities, SNU has been faithful also to its role as a transmitter of knowledge that extends the fruits of its creative R & D to all sectors of society. The establishment of Seoul Techno Holdings, Inc. likewise is an expression of our will to leap even further as an innovative pathfinder. By directly commercializing the outstanding technology that we have developed ourselves, we expect to contribute even more directly to Korea?s industrial and economic development.
Today's conference is a very meaningful event where we can share experiences of the commercialization of university technology with representatives of technology commercialization from renowned universities around the world. Now and in the future, SNU and Seoul Techno Holdings, Inc. will continue to forge very practical cooperative relationships with universities and corporations abroad. Through such international collaboration, SNU will be able to contribute even more to the promotion of welfare both at home and worldwide. Moreover, we will provide full support so that technology developed at other distinguished universities in Korea can be spread globally, with SNU serving as the channel.
Seoul Techno Holdings, Inc. can succeed only with continued interest and support from diverse parties including not only SNU itself but also industries, the academia, the government, and investors. In addition, we at SNU will boldly and resourcefully meet the challenge posed by commercialization instead of merely focusing on the academic aspect.
Last but not least, I strongly hope that all of the distinguished guests gathered here today will offer your generous support and encouragement for the successful launching and continued growth of Seoul Techno Holdings, Inc.
Once again, I am most grateful for your participation and support. Thank you very much.
