Congratulatory Remark
On the Occasion of the 4th BESETOHA Choral Festival
November 6, 2008
Jang-Moo Lee, Ph D
President of Seoul National University
Congratulations on the 4th BESETOHA Choral Festival.
We greatly appreciate the efforts of our host, Beijing University, and the executives from each nation for preparing this truly meaningful festival. We would also like to applaud the conductors and members of all four choirs. We very much look forward to the beautiful harmony that will fill the stage this evening.
The BESETOHA Choral Festival is a festivity in which students from four countries in East Asia gather to sing with one voice and one mind. Born out of spontaneous participation by students from Peking University, University of Tokyo, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, and Seoul National University, this festival was successfully held in 2002 in Seoul, in 2004 in Tokyo, and in 2006 in Hanoi. This year, we welcome all of you to Beijing, the venue of the 4th BESETOHA Choral Festival.
With the advent of globalization, exchange and competition among nations are becoming ever more frequent. In this era, interaction and cooperation with our neighbouring countries therefore is crucial. The BESTOHA Choral Festival, which brings together some of the countries in East Asia through a common love of singing, will contribute greatly to the enhancement of harmony, friendship, and understanding among all of us.
In this context, the BESETOHA Choral Festival is of utmost importance. We have provided an opportunity for the intellectual representatives of East Asia not to vie with one another in academic superiority but to share their cultures and passion for music, thus promoting unity and harmony among themselves.
We very much look forward to the performance given by our students, who have gathered once again in 2 years to present beautiful music to us. We strongly hope that the cultural uniqueness and individuality of each choir will be duly demonstrated and then melt into the youth and romance, vision and passion of East Asian harmony that will resound throughout Beijing.
