Congratulatory Remarks
2007 SNU-LG Press Fellowship Program
President Jang-Moo Lee
Seoul National University
August 27, 2007
Distinguished guests, participating fellows, ladies and gentlemen,
I would like to extend my congratulations to all of those who have been part of the SNU-LG Press Fellowship Program, organized jointly by the LG Sangnam Press Foundation and the Institute of Communication Research at Seoul National University. This program has been most successful since its establishment in 1997, with 105 distinguished journalists from 14 countries participating in it in the past 11 years.
This year, eight leading journalists from around the world are participating in the program. I sincerely welcome all of you to Korea and to Seoul National University. I would also like to express my gratitude to the LG Sangnam Press Foundation that has supported this program from the start, and Dr. Kwang Yung Choo, who has, as its director, made this program a success since its very beginning.
This program can indeed contribute considerably to the era of globalization. Advanced communication technologies have turned our world into a global village. Ideas and information are being instantaneously exchanged among countries, and the importance of mutual understanding and international cooperation among nations therefore is ever greater than before. Nothing is more imperative, at this point in time, than a concerted effort to build and nurture international cooperation for the creation of a better world for the humanity as a whole. The role of journalists in each country in this rapid transition era is thus vital. The press in each nation is a window to the world through which people can see and understand the world beyond their borders. Journalists in each nation have a tremendous responsibility of showing to their people the true picture of the world, with the highest objectivity and integrity.
The SNU-LG Press Fellowship Program intends to contribute to this objective by providing an opportunity for journalists from around the world to gather and consider significant issues facing the global community. I hope that you will exchange diverse ideas for the resolution of worldwide challenges and threats that we face. It is also my wish that this program will build bridges between countries for promoting better understanding and trust, thereby contributing to the advancement of world peace.
Once again, I would like to thank Dr. Choo, and the staff members of the LG Sangnam Press Foundation and the Institute of Communication Research. I hope that every fellow will have a very enjoyable time at Seoul National University and in Korea and wish continued success to the SNU-LG Press Fellowship Program. Thank you.
