Congratulatory Remarks
At the 60th Anniversary of the Korean Mathematical Society
President Jang-Moo Lee
Seoul National University
October 27, 2006
Distinguished mathematicians, respected colleagues, ladies and gentlemen,
It is a great honor and a tremendous pleasure for me to be here today to congratulate you on Global KMS Day, commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Korean Mathematical Society.
I sincerely welcome twenty-six renowned invited speakers and all participants of Global KMS Day at Seoul National University. We are deeply honored by the presence of Professor Efim Zelmanov, a Fields medalist, Professor Masaki Kashiwara, the Vice-President of International Mathematical Union and recipient of the Iyanaga Prize, and Professor Karl Rubin, recipient of the Cole Prize. I would like to thank the President and staff members of the Korean Mathematical Society, together with all members of the Department of Mathematical Sciences of Seoul National University, for making this Conference a great success.
In Oriental philosophy, 60 years means the completion of one full life cycle and the beginning of a new cycle. Hence, a 60th birthday is a very significant event and a time for great celebrations in Korea. On its 60th anniversary, I wish to extend my special congratulations to the Korean Mathematical Society, which has led the development of mathematics in Korea and is now striving for further advances. It was also in this year that three noted Korean mathematicians, Professors Jeong Han Kim (김정한), Yong-Geun Oh (오용근), and Jun-Muk Hwang (황준묵), were invited to speak at the International Congress of Mathematicians, which we can all rejoice and be proud of.
Mathematics is the foundation of science. And its impact on various applied disciplines is constantly increasing in this new era of information and technology. Being one of those who admire mathematics, “the most intellectual art in human history,” I sincerely wish that the Global KMS Day Conference can contribute towards the advancement of mathematics. Seoul National University will provide full support for the promotion of research and education in mathematics in Korea. Thank you.
