Congratulatory Remarks
At the 2006 SNU-LG Press Fellowship Program
President Jang-Moo Lee
Seoul National University
September 4, 2006
Distinguished guests, participating Fellows, ladies and gentlemen,
I would like to extend my congratulations to all of those who have been part of the SNU-LG Press Fellowship Program, organized jointly by the LG Sangnam Press Foundation and the Institute of Communication Research at Seoul National University. Ninety seven distinguished journalists from fourteen countries participated in the SNU-LG Press Fellowship Program for the past ten years.
This year, eight leading journalists from around the world are participating in the program. I sincerely welcome all of you to Korea and to Seoul National University. I would also like to express my gratitude to Mr. Byung-Hoon Ahn, Chairman of the LG Sangnam Press Foundation, who has wholeheartedly supported this program from the beginning, and Dr. Kwang Yung Choo, who has been its director and has endeavored to make this program a success since it was launched in 1997.
This program has a great importance in the era of globalization. Advanced communication technologies have turned our world into a global village. Ideas and information are being exchanged among countries instantaneously, and so we now have unprecedented opportunities to achieve mutual understanding and international cooperation. Nothing is more imperative, at this point in time, than a concerted effort to build and nurture international cooperation to create a world of order and harmony.
In these days of rapid globalization and a more interconnected world, the role of journalists is vital. The press of each nation is a window to the world through which the public can see and evaluate the world beyond their borders. As opinion leaders, journalists have a tremendous responsibility of maintaining high standards of objectivity and integrity.
The SNU-LG Press Fellowship Program intends to contribute towards the realization of a true global village, by providing an opportunity for journalists from around the world to gather and consider the significant issues facing the global community. I hope that you could exchange diverse ideas for the resolution of worldwide challenges and threats we face. It is also my wish that this program could build bridges between countries for promoting better understanding and trust, thus contributing to advancing the cause of world peace.
Again, I would like to thank Chairman Ahn, Dr. Choo and the staff members of the LG Sangnam Press Foundation and the Institute of Communication Research. I hope every fellow will have a very enjoyable stay in Seoul National University and Korea and I wish every success to the SNU-LG Press Fellowship Program. Thank you.
