Luncheon Remarks by
President Un-Chan Chung
On the Occasion of the Conferment of an Honorary Degree upon
Dr. Takeshi Sasaki
President of the University of Tokyo
2 March 2004
Distinguished guests, respected colleagues, ladies and gentlemen:
Good afternoon, and please allow me to take this occasion to thank all of you for taking the time out of your busy schedules to join us here today.
We gather here, of course, to celebrate President Takeshi Sasaki’s exemplary accomplishments over a long and distinguished career in the field of political science. As a leading political scientist, educator, and university president, Dr. Sasaki has earned abiding respect from his colleagues, devotion from his disciples, and wide acclaim for his writings.
Throughout his distinguished career, President Sasaki has sought to broaden and deepen our understanding of political philosophy and political science. Through his dedicated endeavor, President Sasaki can also be credited for bridging and promoting intellectual interaction in between Eastern and Western scholars.
In addition to his academic and administrative accomplishments, we here at Seoul National University also recognize President Sasaki for his invaluable contribution towards political reforms in Japan, as well as his effort to develop the Chosun Cultural Studies major at the University of Tokyo. My colleagues and I firmly believe that the Chosun Cultural Studies has all the potential to become a major academic link that will sustain and deepen ties in between Korea and Japan.
Moreover, we must not forget President Sasaki’s leadership in strengthening the BESETOHA conference, a very special gathering that promotes cooperation and collaboration amongst the four leading universities in China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. I firmly share President Sasaki’s view that a unified and culturally diverse East Asia has much promise to positively influence the international community as a whole.
For his outstanding academic and administrative accomplishments, for being a visionary for political reforms in Japan, for actively promoting a more influential East Asian region… distinguished colleagues, ladies and gentlemen, the list of President Sasaki’s accomplishments go on and on.
Let me simply say that, as President of Seoul National University, it gives me great pleasure to honor President Takeshi Sasaki for his wonderful achievements. I know all my faculty colleagues present join me in expressing to you our profound respect, and congratulate you for your achievements. We look forward to even closer collaboration in between our two universities in the months and years ahead.
Thank you.
